Two dogs were rescued from two different shelters in South Carolina, weeks apart.
Both canines were rescued from dreadful conditions. But it just took a second for them to comprehend each other at a veterinary facility this week.
Simon, a 1-year-old border collie who was still recovering from his ordeal at the hands of his previous owner, carefully moved his paw on the operating table and laid it on Sammie’s.
Sammie, a 4-month-old dog, had been dragged by a car, spray-painted, and shot in his previous life.
Despite the avalanche of medical treatments, Sammie found solace from a fellow survivor that day.
Jackie O’Sullivan, creator of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC, tells The Dodo, “The love and understanding amongst animals is beyond me.”
Perhaps it was the agony they both felt. Perhaps it was the future they now share, owing to the work of Rescue Pups Rock NYC, which rescued these dogs from surrounding shelters and provided them with the care they required.
Both canines will survive their ordeals after receiving significant emergency treatment.
Sammie may yet lose a leg after being wounded with a.22 caliber rifle, but he has made the right type of pals.
As though he’s talking to a fellow survivor who will be there for him every step of the way.
Simon refuses to leave Sammie’s side at the veterinarian clinic.
Perhaps he realizes the small boxer mix needs all the help he can get. While Simon is fast regaining strength and will be adopted shortly, Sammie still has a long way to go on his path to recovery.
According to O’Sullivan, “More operations, physical therapy, laser treatment, and daily bandage changes are anticipated. Because he has been deprived of his ‘typical’ puppyhood, behavioral treatment is also an option.”
